Guests visiting Magic Kingdom this week are being greeted by a familiar sight once again as water returns to the moat surrounding Cinderella Castle, signalling the completion of Walt Disney World’s extensive 2026 repainting project.
The return of the moat restores one of the park’s most iconic views and brings to a close several months of refurbishment work that transformed the appearance of Magic Kingdom’s central landmark. The project began earlier this year when Disney drained the moat to create space for construction equipment needed to access the castle’s upper towers and rooftops.
Throughout the spring, crews worked their way across the castle, replacing the rose-pink colour palette introduced in 2020 with a more traditional scheme featuring cool greys, cream tones, deeper blues and refined gold accents. The restoration was designed to bring the structure closer to its classic appearance while enhancing architectural details that had become less prominent under the previous colour scheme.
By April, much of the visible repainting had been completed, with cranes and high-reach equipment gradually disappearing from the site. Attention then shifted to finishing touches around the castle grounds, including refurbishment of rockwork surrounding the moat. Observers noted that the refilling of the moat would likely be the clearest indication that the project had entered its final stage.
That milestone has now arrived. Water has begun returning to the moat, restoring the reflective vistas that have long been a favourite backdrop for visitors and photographers. The renewed waterway once again frames Cinderella Castle from multiple angles around the hub, Liberty Square and Tomorrowland, completing the visual transformation.
The repainting project was first announced in 2025 and represented one of the most significant cosmetic updates to Cinderella Castle in recent years. While the previous pink-toned makeover was inspired by the 70th anniversary of Disney’s animated Cinderella, many longtime fans welcomed the return to a more classic colour palette.
With the moat refilled and the refreshed colours now visible across the entire structure, Cinderella Castle once again stands as the fully restored centrepiece of Magic Kingdom, ready to greet guests throughout the remainder of 2026 and beyond.
