Update on Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Refurbishment

Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland is gearing up to welcome back Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, and the first real glimpse at what’s inside the refurbishment was recently shown on Good Morning America as part of Walt Disney World’s 2026 updates.

Since closing in August 2025 for a significant overhaul, this interactive dark ride has been slowly emerging from behind construction walls. Walt Disney Imagineering has now revealed that the overhaul goes well beyond fresh paint and minor fixes. The attraction will reopen in spring 2026 with a mix of new technologies, characters and gameplay improvements designed to bring it in line with the more modern interactive rides found at other Disney parks.

One of the most talked-about additions is a brand-new character named Buddy. This cheerful support robot was created by Imagineering in collaboration with Pixar and appears at the very start of the experience. Instead of launching straight into the battle with Emperor Zurg, riders will now be greeted by Buddy, who helps budding Space Rangers get ready for the mission ahead.

Inside the main ride itself, the hyperspace “tunnel” that sets the stage for the climactic space battle has been completely reimagined. All-new animated sequences designed by Pixar bring Buzz Lightyear into the battle against Zurg’s forces, creating a more dynamic visual experience. This marks the first time Buzz himself joins guests in action inside this section of the ride rather than only appearing in the queue.

On the gameplay side, long-standing frustrations with the original ride’s fixed laser blasters are finally being addressed. The refurbished version will introduce handheld blasters, similar to those found on Buzz Lightyear attractions in other parks, giving riders far greater control and easier aiming. Along with this, all of the “Z” targets peppered throughout the ride have been upgraded to react when hit, lighting up and offering clear feedback that riders actually scored a hit.

The ride vehicles themselves are also being renewed. Inspired by the Star Command aesthetic, the new vehicles include onboard screens that show real-time scoring and other mission data, making the competition for Galactic Hero status more engaging and transparent.

Even though the exact reopening date in spring isn’t set in stone yet, Disney has confirmed that the attraction will return with all these enhancements in place, offering a fresh take on one of Magic Kingdom’s most beloved interactive adventures.
