One of Disneyland Park’s most popular Adventureland attractions has temporarily closed as work begins on another refurbishment of the iconic Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye.
The attraction officially entered refurbishment on 8th September 2026, with wooden construction walls and fencing now surrounding the attraction and its entrance. Guests visiting Adventureland will also find signs informing them that tours of the Temple of the Forbidden Eye are not currently being offered.
Indiana Jones Adventure goes behind the walls
Indiana Jones Adventure has been a major part of Disneyland’s Adventureland since opening in 1995. The attraction transports guests into the fictional Temple of the Forbidden Eye, where they board rugged expedition vehicles and set off on a fast-moving journey through a series of dangerous encounters.
The latest closure appears to be part of Disneyland’s ongoing programme of maintenance and refurbishment for the attraction. Disney has not yet announced when the ride will reopen, meaning visitors planning trips in the coming weeks will need to take the temporary closure into account.
The construction walls currently feature theming designed to keep guests within the world of the attraction. A message from Sallah invites adventurers to return for tours of the Temple of the Forbidden Eye, with the fictional setting once again placing the story in the autumn of 1935.
There is currently no confirmed reopening date.
A ride that has received several recent updates
Although the latest refurbishment has only just begun, Indiana Jones Adventure has undergone a number of maintenance periods and updates in recent years.
The attraction received a more substantial refurbishment in early 2025, followed by another brief two-day refurbishment in December of that year. Those periods of work followed a wider series of improvements to the attraction and its effects.
Among the changes made during the recent period was the return of the bridge effect, which had been absent for several years. Props around the attraction’s exit were also refreshed, while the full pre-show returned in early 2025 after being unavailable for approximately five years.
These changes have helped maintain the attraction’s elaborate combination of physical sets, Audio-Animatronics, lighting, projection and special effects, which remain central to the experience more than three decades after its debut.
One of Disneyland’s signature attractions
Indiana Jones Adventure is particularly notable because it was created specifically for Disneyland and combines the Indiana Jones film universe with a ride system designed around an unpredictable expedition.
Rather than following a conventional roller-coaster layout, guests travel through the temple in large expedition vehicles capable of producing sudden movements and jolts. The experience is designed to make each journey feel like a dangerous archaeological expedition, with the attraction’s storyline centred around the mysterious idol Mara.
The attraction opened in 1995 and quickly became one of Disneyland’s headline thrill rides. It remains one of the defining attractions in Adventureland and one of the most ambitious experiences at the original Disneyland Resort.
Another Indiana Jones attraction is on the way
The Disneyland refurbishment also comes at an interesting time for the Indiana Jones franchise within Disney’s theme parks.
Walt Disney World Resort is preparing a new Indiana Jones attraction for Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The new experience will replace DINOSAUR and will feature a completely different story from the Disneyland attraction. Disney has also announced that an Audio-Animatronic representation of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones will appear in the new attraction.
That means fans of the character will soon have another major Disney Parks experience to look forward to, although the Disneyland attraction remains a completely separate adventure.
For now, guests visiting Disneyland will have to explore Adventureland without entering the Temple of the Forbidden Eye. With Disney yet to provide a reopening date, visitors should continue to check the Disneyland Resort’s official attraction schedule when planning their day.
When Indiana Jones Adventure eventually reopens, guests can once again expect to follow Sallah into the temple in search of Mara’s legendary blessings, with the attraction’s familiar combination of storytelling, effects and high-speed adventure waiting on the other side of the refurbishment walls.
