After more than 15 months behind construction walls, Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull at Tokyo DisneySea finally has a reopening date.

Tokyo Disney Resort has confirmed that the popular attraction will resume operations on 30th November 2026, following an extensive period of inspections, maintenance and refurbishment. The announcement also brings an unexpected bonus for fans of the attraction, with Disney confirming that new projection mapping effects and audio will be incorporated into the experience.

The news was shared by Tokyo Disney Resort on 5th August, bringing an end to months of uncertainty surrounding when guests would once again be able to enter the ancient temple alongside Indiana Jones.

Indiana Jones Adventure will return in November

Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull closed on 18th August 2025 for what was initially described as a major refurbishment and inspection period.

With its reopening now scheduled for 30th November 2026, the attraction will have been unavailable to guests for more than 15 months.

That makes this a particularly significant refurbishment for an attraction that has been entertaining visitors at Tokyo DisneySea since the park opened in 2001.

Tokyo Disney Resort’s announcement states that the attraction is undergoing major inspections and renovation before returning to operation. More importantly, the refurbishment will not simply restore the attraction to its previous condition.

New projection mapping effects and new audio are being added to the ride, with Disney describing the changes as creating an even more immersive experience for guests exploring the ancient temple.

Exactly where those effects will appear remains unknown.

What will the new effects look like?

For now, Tokyo Disney Resort has provided only a brief description of the additions, meaning there are plenty of questions surrounding what guests will actually experience when the attraction reopens.

Projection mapping has become an increasingly important tool in modern Disney attractions, allowing physical sets and environments to be enhanced with digitally projected imagery. Used effectively, the technology can transform an existing scene without requiring an attraction to be completely rebuilt.

The addition of new audio could similarly alter the atmosphere and storytelling of the attraction.

However, it would be premature to assume that the Tokyo DisneySea attraction will receive the same updates that have appeared on other versions of Indiana Jones Adventure around the world. The Tokyo version has a substantially different storyline and set of scenes from the attraction at Disneyland in California.

For that reason, the exact implementation of the new effects is likely to be particularly interesting once Disney begins revealing more information.

A very different Indiana Jones adventure

Although Tokyo DisneySea’s Indiana Jones Adventure shares its ride system and track layout with the version at Disneyland Resort, the two attractions tell completely different stories.

At Disneyland, Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye takes guests to India in 1935, where Indiana Jones has discovered the mysterious Temple of the Forbidden Eye and the supernatural deity Mara.

Tokyo DisneySea’s version, meanwhile, is set in Mexico and revolves around the search for the Fountain of Youth.

The attraction is housed inside an enormous temple complex within the Lost River Delta area of Tokyo DisneySea, giving the ride a distinctive identity despite its shared technology with the Disneyland attraction.

The Tokyo version opened with the park in 2001, making the upcoming reopening particularly notable. After a quarter of a century in operation, the attraction is returning from its longest refurbishment to date with confirmed changes to its effects and sound.

Tokyo DisneySea’s next chapter

The return of Indiana Jones Adventure is especially important for Tokyo DisneySea because the attraction has long been one of the park’s signature thrill rides.

Its closure has left a major gap within the Lost River Delta area, particularly for guests looking for a substantial indoor attraction with a combination of physical sets, special effects and motion-based thrills.

The 30th November reopening will therefore restore a major piece of the park’s attraction lineup just in time for the winter season.

But guests returning to the temple should not expect exactly the same experience they remember.

The addition of projection mapping and new audio means that Disney is taking the opportunity to refresh the attraction rather than simply reopening it after maintenance. Until more details are released, however, the extent of those changes remains unclear.

Disney has yet to reveal where the projection mapping will be used, what new audio has been recorded or whether any additional changes to the attraction’s scenes, characters or special effects have been made.

Those details will likely become clearer as the reopening approaches.

For now, the biggest piece of news is official: Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull will once again welcome adventurers at Tokyo DisneySea from 30th November 2026.
