Guests visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom should prepare for a different start to their day, as Walt Disney World has now made its updated rope drop procedures a permanent part of park operations.
The revised morning entry process, which was initially introduced as a test earlier in July, changes where guests wait before the park officially opens. The new system is designed to improve crowd flow, reduce congestion near the entrance, and create a more comfortable experience for guests arriving early.
What Has Changed?
Previously, guests without Early Theme Park Entry access would remain in the Oasis area until the park’s official opening time. Under the new procedure, those guests are now allowed to continue through the Oasis and wait on Discovery Island before the park opens.
Discovery Island offers significantly more open space than the narrow pathways of the Oasis, allowing visitors to spread out while waiting for attractions to begin operating. Although shops and most experiences remain closed during this waiting period, PhotoPass photographers may already be available near the Tree of Life, giving guests an opportunity to capture early morning photos.
Separate Checkpoints for Early Entry
The updated process still preserves the benefits of Disney Resort hotel Early Theme Park Entry.
Rather than separating guests at the front of the park, Cast Members now manage access at several checkpoints leading into the park’s major lands. Resort guests are verified at these locations before continuing into eligible attractions during the 30-minute Early Entry period, while all other guests wait nearby until the official opening time.
The primary checkpoints are positioned at routes leading toward:
- Pandora – The World of Avatar
- Asia, including Expedition Everest
- The former DinoLand U.S.A. area and its surrounding pathways
Why Disney Made the Change
The previous rope drop procedure often resulted in large crowds gathering inside the Oasis, where the winding walkways could quickly become congested during busy mornings.
Moving guests onto Discovery Island distributes crowds across a much larger area, helping reduce bottlenecks before park opening. The updated layout also allows Cast Members to better organise guests heading toward different sections of the park while maintaining Early Entry access for eligible visitors.
What It Means for Your Visit
For most guests, the permanent procedure won’t change how early they should arrive, but it does make the waiting experience more relaxed.
Visitors planning to rope drop popular attractions such as Avatar Flight of Passage or Expedition Everest should still aim to arrive well before Early Theme Park Entry begins. Once inside Discovery Island, guests can position themselves closer to their preferred checkpoint before the park officially opens.
Disney Resort hotel guests will continue to receive access to select attractions during Early Theme Park Entry, while day guests can expect a smoother transition into the park once regular operating hours begin.
A Small Operational Change With a Big Impact
Although the adjustment may seem minor, it represents one of the most noticeable improvements to Animal Kingdom’s morning operations in recent years.
By relocating the guest holding area from the Oasis to Discovery Island, Walt Disney World has created a more spacious, organised, and guest-friendly rope drop experience while continuing to support Early Theme Park Entry for Disney Resort guests.
