First introduced as part of the new World of Frozen expansion at Disneyland Paris, the free-roaming Olaf represents a significant leap in Disney’s animatronics technology. Unlike traditional figures that remain fixed in place, this version of the beloved snowman can move independently, interact with guests, and perform within live shows.

Now, Disney is preparing to bring this same cutting-edge character experience to another park, expanding the reach of the technology beyond its original debut location.

A New Generation of Disney Animatronics

The walking Olaf is not just another character meet-and-greet. Developed by Walt Disney Imagineering in collaboration with advanced robotics and AI systems, the figure uses reinforcement learning to mimic natural movement and behaviour. This allows Olaf to walk, balance, and gesture in ways that closely resemble his animated counterpart.

One of the most impressive aspects of the character is its ability to operate in dynamic environments. In Paris, Olaf even performs on a moving boat during the “Celebration in Arendelle” show, demonstrating the system’s ability to adapt to unstable surfaces.

Expanding Beyond Paris

While Disneyland Paris was the first park to showcase the walking Olaf, plans have always hinted at a broader rollout. The character is expected to appear in other World of Frozen lands, including locations such as Hong Kong Disneyland, with additional parks now joining that list.

This expansion reflects Disney’s long-term goal of populating its parks with mobile, interactive characters rather than static figures or costumed performers.
