Disney has revealed new details about upcoming changes to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom, with Imagineers hinting at hidden Easter eggs, a refreshed queue, and subtle surprises tied to Pixar’s upcoming film Toy Story 5.
The classic Tomorrowland attraction has been undergoing a major refurbishment since August 2025. When it reopens, guests can expect a modernised version of the ride while still keeping the familiar gameplay that fans have enjoyed for decades.
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin first opened in 1998 and quickly became one of Magic Kingdom’s most popular interactive rides. Riders board a spinning space cruiser and attempt to defeat Emperor Zurg by shooting laser targets throughout colourful scenes while competing for the highest score.
The updated attraction will introduce redesigned ride vehicles and new handheld blasters, replacing the older fixed cannons. These blasters will feature sound effects, haptic feedback, and coloured lasers, making it easier for riders to see their shots and interact with targets.
Alongside these technical upgrades, Imagineers have also confirmed that the ride will include new hidden details for guests to discover. According to Walt Disney Imagineering producer Kimberly Alison, the team worked carefully to preserve many of the attraction’s long-time secrets while adding additional surprises made possible by the new digital systems.
These hidden elements may include references to Toy Story 5, which is scheduled to release in June 2026. While Disney has not revealed exactly what these references will look like, Imagineers hinted that observant riders might notice clues or playful nods to the upcoming film throughout the attraction.
The queue area will also receive updates. Although specific details have not yet been revealed, Disney confirmed that the queue will be reassessed and refreshed so it matches the upgraded look and feel of the ride itself.
Another notable change involves the ride’s scoring system. For years, the highest possible score was 999,999 points, earning players the prestigious Galactic Hero ranking. With the refurbishment, that score cap will be removed, allowing riders to push their totals even higher while still keeping the Galactic Hero title as a key milestone.
Together, these updates aim to modernise the experience while preserving the competitive gameplay and playful secrets that have made Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin a favourite for nearly three decades.
When the attraction reopens in 2026, guests may find themselves doing more than simply chasing a high score. They may also be searching every corner of the ride for hidden Easter eggs — and possibly the first hints of Pixar’s next Toy Story adventure.
