First Ankole Calf Born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 20 Years

A rare and exciting wildlife arrival has taken place at Walt Disney World, as Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge celebrates the birth of its first Ankole cattle calf in more than two decades. The newborn female marks a significant moment for the resort’s animal programme and the savanna habitat that guests can observe from the lodge.

The calf was born to Winnie, one of the lodge’s resident Ankole cattle. According to Disney’s animal care team, both mother and calf are healthy and currently spending time bonding backstage before they eventually join the herd on the savanna where guests will be able to see them.

This birth is particularly notable because it is the first Ankole calf born at Walt Disney World in more than 20 years. For Disney’s team of veterinarians and animal specialists, the event represents a meaningful milestone in the long-term management and care of the animals living at the resort.

Ankole cattle are among the most visually striking animals in the world, famous for their enormous curved horns which can span up to around eight feet from tip to tip. The breed originates from East Africa and has deep cultural significance in countries such as Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania.

Although the calf’s horns will not appear immediately, they are expected to begin developing within a few months as she grows. When she eventually joins the herd, guests visiting the lodge’s savanna areas will be able to spot her among the giraffes, zebras and other African wildlife that roam the habitat.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge itself is designed as an African-themed wildlife resort where animals live across several savanna environments surrounding the hotel. Guests can watch the animals from viewing areas throughout the property or from rooms that overlook the savanna landscape, creating an immersive wildlife experience rarely found at a hotel.

For now, the newest member of the herd is enjoying some quiet time behind the scenes, but her eventual debut on the savanna will give visitors a chance to witness a very special addition to the lodge’s wildlife family — the first Ankole calf born there since the mid-2000s.
