Walt Disney World is set to significantly enhance transportation at its flagship park, Magic Kingdom, with the addition of a fourth ferryboat, marking the first expansion of the fleet in over 50 years.
The new vessel, scheduled to launch in 2027, will increase the number of ferryboats operating across the Seven Seas Lagoon from three to four. This route, connecting the Transportation and Ticket Center with Magic Kingdom, is one of the resort’s most iconic and heavily used transport links.
First new ferry since 1976
The expansion is particularly notable because it represents the first addition to the Magic Kingdom ferry fleet since 1976. For decades, the existing trio of boats has handled the steady flow of guests travelling to and from the park, especially during peak times such as opening and closing.
Each ferryboat can carry hundreds of passengers per trip, making them a crucial part of Disney’s transport network. However, demand has continued to grow alongside park attendance, and the addition of a fourth vessel is expected to ease congestion and reduce wait times during busy periods.
Construction and design
The new ferryboat is already under construction at a marina in Florida. Once key components are completed, it will be transported in sections to Walt Disney World, where it will be assembled, painted, and finished on-site. The entire process is expected to take around a year before the ferry enters service in 2027.
In terms of design, the new vessel will closely match the existing fleet, maintaining the classic look and high-capacity functionality that guests are familiar with.
Honouring Disney leadership
Continuing a long-standing tradition, the new ferryboat will be named after an influential figure in Disney history: Meg Gilbert Crofton, who served as president of Walt Disney World from 2006 to 2013.
She joins a distinguished group of individuals already honoured with ferry names, including Admiral Joe Fowler, General Joe Potter, and Richard F. Irvine—key contributors to the development of Walt Disney World.
Improving the guest experience
Beyond simply adding capacity, the new ferry underscores Disney’s broader efforts to improve the overall guest experience. Ferry transport is not just functional but also part of the attraction itself, offering scenic views and a relaxed approach to arriving at the park.
With Magic Kingdom undergoing major expansion projects, enhancing transportation infrastructure is a logical step. The additional ferry will help manage growing visitor numbers while preserving the smooth, immersive journey Disney aims to provide.
