Guests planning a visit to Magic Kingdom this autumn will need to make an adjustment to their plans, with the Walt Disney World Railroad scheduled to close for an extended refurbishment beginning 28th September 2026.
The closure is expected to run through 29th October, with the railroad currently scheduled to return to service on 30th October. That means one of Magic Kingdom’s most recognisable and relaxing experiences will be unavailable for virtually the entire month of October.
The Walt Disney World Railroad has already been operating differently from its traditional service for more than a year. Since July 2025, the train has been running as a shuttle between Main Street, U.S.A. Station and Fantasyland Station, rather than completing its familiar circuit around Magic Kingdom.
This latest closure will temporarily suspend even that shortened service.
When will the Walt Disney World Railroad close?
The railroad’s final scheduled operating day before the refurbishment is 27th September 2026.
It will then be closed from 28th September through 29th October, with a scheduled reopening on 30th October.
The current timetable is:
9:00am to 8:30pm on 30th October, according to the current refurbishment information.
As with other Walt Disney World refurbishment dates, the schedule can change, so guests travelling around the reopening period should check the official park calendar before visiting. Disney’s calendar notes that attraction schedules are subject to change without notice.
A very different railroad experience in recent years
The upcoming refurbishment is particularly notable because the Walt Disney World Railroad has already been operating on a restricted route.
The Frontierland Station has remained unavailable while construction continues in the area, meaning guests have not been able to use the railroad to travel around the full Magic Kingdom loop.
Instead, the attraction has operated between Main Street, U.S.A. and Fantasyland.
That shortened operation began after the railroad’s traditional route was disrupted by the major construction taking place in and around Frontierland.
The new closure therefore represents another interruption for guests who have been using the train as a convenient way to move between different parts of the park.

The closure comes during a major period of change for Magic Kingdom
The railroad refurbishment is taking place against the backdrop of some of the biggest changes Magic Kingdom has seen in years.
Construction is continuing in the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island area as Disney works towards the development of Piston Peak National Park, a new Cars-inspired area planned for the park.
The changes have already had a direct impact on the Walt Disney World Railroad because of the work taking place around its Frontierland route.
Magic Kingdom is also preparing for the future development of Villains Land, adding to the extensive transformation taking place across the park.
For regular Walt Disney World visitors, the Magic Kingdom of 2026 is therefore already looking considerably different from the park many guests remember from previous trips.
When will the railroad return?
At present, the railroad is scheduled to resume operation on 30th October 2026.
That date is particularly useful for guests planning visits around Halloween and the transition into the Christmas season.
However, the return of the trains does not mean the traditional full-circle railroad experience will immediately return.
The Frontierland Station remains affected by the wider construction taking place in the area, so the railroad is expected to continue operating on its shortened route between Main Street, U.S.A. and Fantasyland when it returns.
In other words, guests should not currently expect the railroad to resume its complete Magic Kingdom circuit simply because the refurbishment has ended.
What this means for your Disney World trip
For most visitors, the temporary closure should not require a major change to a Magic Kingdom itinerary.
There are still plenty of attractions, entertainment and dining experiences available throughout the park.
The biggest practical difference will be the additional walking.
Guests who particularly enjoy the railroad, however, may want to adjust their plans around the closure. Anyone visiting before 28th September could still have the opportunity to ride the train on its current shortened route, while those arriving from 30th October onwards should be able to experience the railroad again.
Visitors travelling during October should simply treat the railroad as unavailable and plan their Magic Kingdom day accordingly.
