The Universal United Kingdom Resort project has continued to gather momentum over the summer, with activity around the Bedfordshire site increasing and government and local authorities beginning to prepare for the wider impact of the resort.

Although Universal has yet to reveal the individual attractions or themed lands planned for the park, the latest developments suggest the project is moving firmly from the planning stage into delivery.

Construction activity ramps up

The biggest development in recent weeks has been the continued progress of enabling works at the Bedfordshire site.

Preliminary work officially began earlier this year, following the government granting planning permission for the resort in December 2025. The approved development includes a major theme park, a 500-room hotel and a retail, dining and entertainment district.

Recent reporting indicates that machinery and earthmoving activity has become increasingly visible across the site, with significant quantities of soil being moved as the area is prepared for the much larger construction programme to come. Importantly, Universal is still describing this stage as enabling and preparatory work rather than the construction of individual attractions.

The official project website continues to describe the development as the first Universal-branded theme park and resort destination in both the UK and Europe.

The name is now official

Universal also formally confirmed the project’s name earlier this year: Universal United Kingdom Resort.

The announcement marked another significant milestone for the development, which had previously been widely referred to as Universal Studios UK or Universal Bedford. Universal has confirmed that the resort is targeting a 2031 opening.

Tourism minister Stephanie Peacock chaired the first Universal UK regional roundtable, bringing together Universal, central government and local authorities. Discussions covered areas including workforce training, local businesses, tourism and regional development. New working groups are also being established around the creative industries, culture and heritage and the visitor economy.

That regional focus is becoming increasingly important. Authorities beyond Bedfordshire are beginning to examine how the resort could affect their own economies, visitor numbers and infrastructure as well.

Transport remains one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle

Getting millions of visitors to and from the resort will be one of the project’s most important challenges.

The Government’s infrastructure support is intended to help prepare the wider transport network, while discussions continue around rail and road connections serving the site.

With the resort positioned between Bedford and Milton Keynes, its eventual transport arrangements could have a much wider impact on the region than the theme park itself.
