Marvel Studios arrived at D23 2026 with plenty to prove, and the studio delivered one of its most significant showcases in years. Held in Anaheim in August, Disney’s major fan event gave Marvel fans a clearer look at the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the first official cast announcement for the new X-Men film, fresh footage from Avengers: Doomsday and a substantial preview of VisionQuest.

While Marvel had already revealed major pieces of its upcoming slate at San Diego Comic-Con, D23 provided the opportunity to put some of those projects into a broader picture. The message was clear: the MCU is heading towards an enormous collision between its established heroes, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men.

The biggest announcement of the night was undoubtedly the official unveiling of Marvel’s new X-Men.

Marvel finally reveals its new X-Men

After years of anticipation, Marvel Studios has officially assembled the principal cast for its new X-Men film. Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey, while Kit Connor takes on the role of Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops. Samara Weaving has been cast as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette will play Rogue, Maya Boyd will portray Storm and Christopher Abbott will take on the iconic role of Professor Charles Xavier.

Perhaps the most surprising casting announcement was Adam Driver as Mister Sinister, giving the film a major villain from the X-Men comics. The film will be directed by Jake Schreier and is currently scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 5th May 2028. It is expected to represent a major new chapter for the MCU once the current Multiverse Saga has reached its conclusion.

The announcement is particularly significant because Marvel has spent years carefully introducing mutants into the MCU. Characters and references connected to the X-Men have increasingly appeared across Marvel projects, but this marks the first time the studio has formally presented its new core X-Men team.

It also means Marvel is finally moving beyond the legacy of the Fox X-Men films and creating its own version of the team for the MCU. That does not necessarily mean the old films are being forgotten. Quite the opposite. Marvel appears increasingly interested in connecting its new stories with the history of Marvel on screen, something that becomes particularly important with Avengers: Doomsday.

Avengers: Doomsday gets a major new trailer

Marvel also unveiled new footage from Avengers: Doomsday, one of the most ambitious films in the studio’s history. Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU, but not as Tony Stark. Instead, he plays Victor von Doom, with Doctor Doom positioned as one of the central figures in the next major Marvel crossover.

The new footage reportedly brings together characters from across several generations of Marvel storytelling, including the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men. The trailer also features appearances connected to the original X-Men films, further demonstrating how Marvel intends to use the multiverse to bring different eras of its cinematic history together.

One of the most striking moments sees Doom demonstrate just how powerful he has become, including an encounter with Thor and Stormbreaker. The footage also teases the involvement of the X-Men and their iconic Sentinels. The scale of Doomsday is becoming increasingly difficult to overstate. Rather than functioning as another Avengers sequel in the traditional sense, the film appears to be positioning itself as a celebration of multiple generations of Marvel characters.

That includes the return of familiar faces, new versions of established heroes and characters who have only recently entered the MCU. Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled to open in cinemas on 18th December 2026.

The X-Men and Avengers are heading towards the same battlefield

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the D23 footage is what it suggests about the relationship between the new X-Men film and Avengers: Doomsday.

Marvel has spent years building towards a point where its various corners of the universe can coexist. The arrival of the Fantastic Four has already expanded the MCU into a more cosmic and multiversal direction, while Deadpool and Wolverine opened the door to characters and realities previously separated from the main continuity. Now the X-Men are being brought into the centre of the story.

The new D23 footage appears to make that connection even stronger. The X-Mansion and familiar mutant imagery are reportedly featured in the Doomsday material, suggesting that Marvel’s new X-Men are not being introduced into isolation. Their story is part of the larger conflict already unfolding.

That could make the transition from Doomsday into Avengers: Secret Wars particularly important. The two films are being developed as a connected event, with Secret Wars expected to push the multiverse storyline to its ultimate conclusion.

VisionQuest gets its own spotlight

Marvel’s Disney+ plans also received attention at D23, with VisionQuest receiving a major preview.

The series will continue the story established by WandaVision and expand the storyline of White Vision. Paul Bettany returns as Vision, while James Spader returns as Ultron, giving the series an intriguing connection to the original Avengers films. VisionQuest is expected to explore artificial intelligence, identity and Vision’s attempts to understand what he has become. The footage shown at D23 reportedly teased a strange digital environment and the return of Ultron, while also introducing a mysterious character claiming to be Vision’s son.

The series will premiere on Disney+ on 14th October 2026. That release date puts VisionQuest only a couple of months before Avengers: Doomsday, making its position within Marvel’s wider storyline particularly interesting.

Marvel is embracing its history

Perhaps the most important takeaway from D23 is that Marvel is no longer simply looking forward. The MCU has reached a point where its history has become part of its storytelling. Characters from earlier Marvel franchises can now appear alongside modern MCU heroes, allowing Marvel Studios to turn decades of superhero cinema into one enormous narrative playground.

Avengers: Doomsday appears to be the clearest expression of that strategy yet. Robert Downey Jr. is returning in an entirely different role. Chris Evans is back. Classic X-Men characters are involved. The Fantastic Four are now established members of the MCU. Meanwhile, a brand-new generation of X-Men has been introduced.

It is an ambitious approach, but it also carries considerable risk. Marvel has to make sure that the nostalgia supports the story rather than becoming the story. The new X-Men film will therefore be particularly important. Once the multiverse storyline concludes, Marvel will need a strong foundation for the next era of the MCU, and the X-Men could become one of its most important franchises.

What comes next for Marvel?

D23 2026 did not reveal every project Marvel has in development, but it provided a much clearer picture of the road ahead. The immediate priority is Avengers: Doomsday, followed by VisionQuest and eventually Avengers: Secret Wars. Beyond that, Marvel is preparing to introduce its new X-Men team in 2028, potentially marking the beginning of an entirely new phase of the MCU.

The studio is also continuing to develop projects including Ghost Rider and Black Panther 3, both of which were highlighted at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year. Ryan Gosling is set to play Ghost Rider, while Black Panther 3 is currently scheduled for December 2028.

Taken together, these projects suggest that Marvel is attempting to do something quite different from the first decade of the MCU. The Infinity Saga was ultimately about bringing a single generation of characters together. The next chapter is about bringing together entire generations of Marvel history.

The X-Men are no longer waiting outside the door. Doctor Doom is taking centre stage. The Avengers are preparing for their biggest battle yet, and the multiverse is bringing heroes and villains from across Marvel’s cinematic history into the same story.
