Disney has confirmed that the Humunga Kowabunga speed slides at Typhoon Lagoon will close on 20th January 2026 ahead of the water park’s seasonal refurbishment. The trio of side-by-side high-speed body slides, which have sent riders down a 214-foot drop since Typhoon Lagoon opened in 1989, will be unavailable well before the rest of the park shuts for the annual maintenance period.
The early closure suggests that Disney intends to carry out significant work on the attraction during the broader Typhoon Lagoon refurbishment, which begins when Blizzard Beach reopens on 15th February 2026. A construction permit recently filed with Orange County lists ProSlide Technology as the contractor for “general construction” at the slide’s location, leaving open the possibility of either routine maintenance or more extensive rebuilding.
Humunga Kowabunga has been a staple of Typhoon Lagoon for decades, known for thrilling riders at speeds of up to 30 mph. Its closure ahead of the refurbishment means guests visiting the water park early in the year will miss what has long been one of its signature attractions.
Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach are both scheduled to operate simultaneously from 26th May through 8th September 2026, giving guests summer access to water park fun while work continues behind the scenes.
