At Magic Kingdom, one of Frontierland’s most beloved thrill rides, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, is charging closer to its eagerly awaited return. After being closed for a substantial refurbishment since early January 2025, Walt Disney Imagineering has begun to share new details about what guests can expect when the wildest roller coaster in the wilderness reopens in spring 2026.
This project is not a simple tune-up but one of the most comprehensive overhauls the attraction has seen in years. Imagineers have taken the opportunity to refresh many aspects of the ride experience, beginning with all-new ride vehicles designed for improved comfort and reliability. These modernised trains are part of Disney’s goal to preserve the classic feel of the attraction while subtly elevating the guest experience.
Beyond the vehicles, visitors returning to Frontierland will notice thematic enhancements woven into the mountain itself. For the first time in the attraction’s history, gold props will be incorporated throughout the scenery, reinforcing the backstory of an old mining operation and adding visual richness to the adventure. Several show effects that have been dormant for years are also being reinstated, bringing some lost layers of magic back into the coaster’s narrative.
Disney has hinted that some classic effects and scenes will make a comeback, and there are even references to new interactions — suggesting that the mountain might feel more alive and dynamic than in its previous incarnation.
Behind the scenes, construction has been extensive. Walls around the attraction have been expanded deeper into Frontierland as testing continues, and crews have been spotted running trains on the track ahead of reopening. Portions of the nearby landscape have also been reconfigured, and new structures consistent with Big Thunder’s rustic aesthetic are rising near the ride’s entrance and exit areas.
Despite the length of the closure — nearly a year — the effort reflects Disney’s ambition to keep one of its most enduring roller coasters feeling fresh for a new generation of guests. When it returns, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will likely feel familiar in its thrills while offering updated storytelling, technology, and visuals that honour its legacy within Magic Kingdom.
